Kaatarskill Clove, a dramatic valley cutting eastward to the Hudson Valley from the plateau ridge of the Catskills, painted by Thomas Cole and his fellow Hudson River School artist and friend Asher B. Durand, was subjected to clear-cut logging in the early 19th Century. Their artistic portrayal of the scene eventually led to the protection of this landscape as part of the Catskill Park and Forest Preserve.
