Description
HMS Surprise,
The HMS Surprise is a replica of the Royal Navy frigate Rose. She was completed in 1970 and has traveled thousands of miles as an attraction and training vessel. She was featured in the academy award winning movie, "Master and Commander".
The HMS Surprise was added to the San Diego Maritime Museum in 2004 and she is docked next to the Star Of India.
This image is of the HMS Surprise's figurehead. Figureheads were common on ships from the 1800's. The size of the figurehead often was determined by the size of the ship and the wallet of the owner. The larger the ship, the thicker the wallet usually meant the larger of the carving.
Earlier figureheads from the Roman empire represented gods and were put on ships to help insure safe voyage.
